PERFORMANCE MEDICINE

Orthopedic Care for People Who Aren't Waiting to Get Hurt

Dr. Ceballos Dual Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist

Most people meet an orthopedic surgeon for the first time after something has already gone wrong. Performance Medicine is my answer to a different question: what if the first conversation happened before that while you’re still moving well, still training hard, still performing at a high level, and simply want to keep it that way for as long as possible?

This isn’t recovery from an injury, and it isn’t a wellness package. It’s proactive orthopedic and sports medicine care for people athletes and non-athletes alike who treat their physical performance as an asset worth managing deliberately, not something to think about only once it breaks down. Nothing about Performance Medicine replaces treating an actual injury when one occurs I still do that, quickly, when it’s needed. What it adds is a track for people who don’t want their first meaningful orthopedic evaluation to be the day something tears.

What a Performance Medicine Evaluation Looks Like

Movement & Biomechanical Assessment

A structured look at how you actually move gait, landing mechanics, single-leg stability, alignment, and the movement patterns most likely to predict future injury, not just whether something currently hurts. This is the foundation of the evaluation: understanding your mechanics before anything goes wrong, rather than reconstructing what happened after an injury.

Direct Joint Evaluation With Needle Arthroscopy, Where Warranted

For patients with a relevant history or risk factors, needle arthroscopy can give a direct look at joint and cartilage health well before symptoms would otherwise prompt an MRI the same precision-first philosophy I apply to every other part of this practice, used here proactively instead of reactively.

Baseline Strength & Asymmetry Testing

Identifying strength imbalances, movement compensations, and asymmetries between limbs before they turn into the overuse injuries they typically predict. This baseline also becomes a reference point for tracking change over time, rather than a one-time snapshot.

Individualized Performance Plan

Built from what the evaluation actually shows which may include targeted rehabilitation and movement retraining, biologic optimization, recovery technology, or simply a monitoring plan and a clear set of benchmarks to track over time. Performance Medicine doesn’t require a separate set of technologies from the rest of my practice; it applies the same tools earlier and with a different intent.

Orthobiologics Used Proactively for Joint and Tendon Resilience

PRP, BMAC, and other regenerative therapies can be used to support joint and tendon resilience before a problem becomes symptomatic, when the evaluation supports it. Not every patient needs this, and it’s individualized based on what your assessment shows full detail on these therapies lives on the PRP Therapy and Stem Cell & Cellular Therapies pages.

Recovery Technologies

Class IV laser, shockwave therapy, and advanced sports rehabilitation are integrated into ongoing performance maintenance rather than used only after injury tools applied as part of a proactive plan, not reserved for the recovery room.

Movement and Neuromuscular Retraining

Correcting the mechanical patterns most likely to cause a future injury, before they do. Where the assessment identifies a compensation or imbalance, targeted retraining addresses the pattern directly rather than only treating symptoms if and when they eventually appear.

Who This Is For

How I Can Help

A performance evaluation is only as good as the person interpreting it. Because I’m a practicing orthopedic surgeon with direct arthroscopic, biologic, and rehabilitation expertise, a Performance Medicine evaluation here isn’t a generic fitness screening it’s a genuine orthopedic assessment, with the full weight of surgical judgment behind every recommendation, whether that recommendation is “keep doing exactly what you’re doing” or “let’s address this before it becomes a problem.”

Important Disclosure

Performance Medicine evaluations and proactive interventions are individualized based on a comprehensive assessment. Some therapies referenced, including certain regenerative and biologic treatments, may be investigational or not FDA-approved for specific indications. Proactive evaluation does not guarantee prevention of future injury, and individual outcomes vary. A physician patient relationship and informed consent are required before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have an injury to come in for this?

No. Performance Medicine is specifically for people who don’t currently have an injury but want a proactive orthopedic evaluation a baseline read on joint health, movement mechanics, and injury risk before anything goes wrong.

How is this different from Athlete Recovery & Longevity?

Athlete Recovery & Longevity is built around recovering from an injury and protecting a joint that’s already shown wear. Performance Medicine starts earlier a proactive evaluation for people who haven’t been injured yet but want to understand and optimize their movement, mechanics, and joint health before that happens.

What does a Performance Medicine evaluation actually involve?

A movement and biomechanical assessment, baseline strength and asymmetry testing, and for patients with relevant risk factors or history direct joint evaluation using needle arthroscopy. From there, I build an individualized plan based on what the evaluation actually shows.

Is this only for professional athletes?

No. While competitive athletes are a natural fit, I see just as many active adults, former athletes, and busy professionals whose physical performance matters to them, regardless of whether they compete.

Can this actually prevent an injury?

Proactive evaluation and correction of movement patterns, strength asymmetries, and early joint changes can meaningfully reduce injury risk, but no evaluation can guarantee prevention. What it can do is give you an honest, evidence based picture of where you stand rather than an assumption.

Does Performance Medicine include biologic treatments?

It can, when the evaluation supports it PRP or other regenerative therapies may be used proactively to support joint and tendon resilience. Not every patient needs this, and it’s individualized based on what your assessment shows.
